Considering a World Without Israel

When the terrorists flew the airplanes into the World Trade Center the question Americans asked frequently was, "What did we do to deserve this?"

Of course, the answer given from a variety of sources, none of whom actually had any clear idea of why those 19 crazies did what the did--and one wonders if any of them knew why they did what they did--was, oh, this is payback for the United States support of Israel.

Because of the United States, Israel has had the power to shell, bomb and destroy its Palestinian and Arab neighbors, the story went and that's why the Arabs all hate us.

Of course, since the "Arab Spring" started, it has become pretty clear the Arabs do not need Israel to engage in mayhem, murder and malevolence. Sunni and Shiite seem to be enough.

The Israelis have said since their inception, if we weren't here, the Arabs would be killing each other. At least we've given them a common enemy.

Recently, various Islamic members of Parliament, along with some white bread members of the Labour party have suggested we move Israel to the United States as a way of cooling  the cauldron of the Middle East.

This has been a suggestion made by others--and always rejected as the essence of anti Semitism, but Michael Chabon wrote of this in an alternate historical novel--and well worth reading--"The Yiddish Policeman's Union," in which Jews were provided a homeland in Alaska following the Holocaust.

Except for those Jews who feel the Biblical names and places still resonate, I suspect at least some of the six million Israelis would be happy to get out of the geography they currently occupy and move to say, Montana.

But, whatever anti Semites in the British Parliament say, one has only to look at Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and Saudi Arabia to imagine what the world would be like if Israel picked up and vacated the premises.
